Gov. Alex Otti of Abia State Wednesday, said he will personally foot the bills for patients at Federal Medical Centre, FMC Umuahia, assuring alao that the state would support the in completing the center’s new Accident and Emergency, A & E Ward.
Governor Otti disclosed this when he met with the Medical Director of the Federal Government’s hospital, Prof. Azubuike Onyebuchi while on a brief stop over at the hospital.
Otti used the opportunity of his visit to empathise with patients receiving treatments for various cases, promising that he would personally foot the bills for the patients, some of who were lying critically ill, at the time of the visit.
Responding, the Medical Director, FMC Umuahia Prof. Azubuike Onyebuchi thanked the state governor for the visit, describing the offer of support to the establishment and footing of the medical bills of the patients as unprecedented.
The current A & E ward is smaller and yet to be properly equipped to handle the large number of patients that are admitted daily into the facility, hence the construction of a new wing where work is ongoing.
The FMC Umuahia is currently the only functional public medical facility in Abia State that can manage cases of emergency as well as other secondary and tertiary health cases apart from General Hospital, Amachara.
