Martial arts now part of NYSC orientation program – Abia State Coordinator

The National Youth Service Corps, NYSC in the last few years has recorded a paradigm shift in the orientation course contents, aligning it with the prevailing socio-economic realities in the country.

The State Coordinator, NYSC Abia, Mrs. Ufuoma Dick-Iruenabere disclosed this Tuesday on the occasion of the opening/swearing-in ceremoney of the Batch “C” Stream 1 corps members deployed to Abia State held at the NYSC orientation camp in Umunna in Bende LGA.

Mrs. Dick-Iruenabere said, “This shift witnessed the introduction of martial arts into the course contents in order to equip Corps Members with the basic self-defense skills in a bid to enhance their personal security”.

She advised, “It will be wise to take this training seriously. That notwithstanding, the scheme is always in touch with the various security agencies to ensure that your security is not compromised.

“You will be conscripted to participate in all committees. Let me hasten to say here, that membership of these committees is a sure way of learning the rudiments of administration and leadership, a rare opportunity I enjoin you to grab with both hands”.

The Abia NYSC boss appreciated the Governor Alex Otti for all his supports “and who recently sent a team of experts to inspect the deplorable state of this camp for the purpose of rehabilitation and reconstruction of the camp facilities. We do sincerely hope that work will soon commence for the upgrade of this camp”.

In his speech, Governor Alex Otti who was represented by the state Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Sir Nwobilor Ananaba noted, “Our Administration is committed to the welfare and security of corps members posted to the state with a view to making the scheme more functional, more efficient, and more effective.

“Our determination to strengthen and deepen the scheme is derived from our recognition of the fact that, for us to achieve effective transformation, we must provide enabling environment for our youths to optimally realize their potentials and steadfastly engender the requisite creative and productive capabilities”.

In his speech, the Honourable Commissioner for Youth and Sports/ Chairman NYSC Governing Board, Sir Nwobilor Ananaba, who was represented by a Director of Information, Ministry of Youth, Mrs. Mercy Okezie, informed “the Orientation course is a training for you to imbibe the tenets of leadership. You are expected to be disciplined, and must adapt to the camp environment and try as much as possible to manage the facilities available to you”.

A total of 1, 273 prospective corps members, comprising of 635 males and 638 females were involved.
