Abia State Government, ABSG has stated it’s resolve to show sympathy with the injured and the families of those that died during last week’s car crash involving Abia State University Uturu, ABSU medical students returning from Uturu after their senior colleagues’ induction and where three died. The dead are two 500-level and one 400-level students.
According to the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Publicity, Mr Ferdinand Ekeoma, the state governor m Alex Otti has directed the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, to liaise with the families of the dead students to enable the state government participate in their burials.
Ekeoma further disclosed that the government will also assist in offsetting the bills of the injured.
It would be recalled that last Thursday, the students were involved in a fatal accident along Okigwe axis of the Enugu – Port Harcourt Expressway, resulting in the death of three, of the six occupants, two hospitalized, and one miraculously escaped.
Meanwhile, the ABSU final year Medicine and Surgery student Favour Okpanku who d!ed in that fatal accident is set to be buried in Abia.
According to a school blog. “The family of Eze P.N. Okpanku Of Mbutu Ancient Kingdom in Isiala South Local Government Area of Abia State has announced the burial arrangement of their beloved daughter, Miss Favour Nwanyidola Okpanku one of the three ABSU Medical students that died in the Fatal motor accident along Okigwe – Umuahia Road in Abia State while returning from the Induction ceremony of their Senior Colleagues.
“Favour came out of the accident Scene alive but later gave up the ghost due to internal injuries and bleeding will be buried on Wednesday 27th March 2024 at her Fathers Compound”.
At the evening of 25th March 2024, students of the department of Medicine and Surgery, Abia State University, Uturu Campus, observed a prayer and candle light procession for the three students of the college who were died.
According to the SUG PRO-elect, Ohanusi Victor, “We continue to pray that they rest in peace, and that the almighty would grant their families the fortitude to bear the loss”.
Meanwhile, the Abia State University Uturu, ABSU has identified the students to be Theophilus Ojike – 500 level, Favour Okpanku – 500 level and Okorle Chidiebube Adile – 400 level.
In a statement issued b the school Registrar, Acho Elendu and dated 22th March, 2023, the school said, “The Vice-Chancellor, Abia State University, Distinguished Professor Onyemachi M, Ogbulu, on behalf of Management and Senate, bemoans the tragic death of three medical students of the University, who were involved in a fatal motor accident along the Enugu-Okigwe expressway, while returning from the 30” Induction/Swearing-in ceremony of graduating Medical Doctors of the University, on Thursday, 21% March, 2023.
“The Vice-Chancellor described the death of the three students as most unfortunate and a colossal loss to their families, the University community and humanity, praying the Almighty God to grant the bereaved families the strength and disposition to bear the huge loss”.
