Past administration slept over cleanup exercise – House C’ttee on Env

Abia State House of Assembly Committee on Environment says, the immediate – past administration in Abia State took the state monthly environmental exercise for granted.

The chairman, Abia State House of Assembly Committee on Environment, and member representing Ohafia South state constituency, Hon. Kalu Mba Kalu disclosed this Saturday in Umuahia after monitoring the March edition of the exercise, stating however that with the level of sensitization, the state government is not leaving any stones unturned to ensure that the state is clean.

“The last administration in the state was sleeping over the cleanup. We will not accept that. However, I am happy with the level of participation this month”, he said.

Also speaking for the Commissioner, Ministry of Environment, Philemon Asonye Ogbonna, the Permanent Secretary, Ikechukwu Oriuwa described the edition of the exercise as satisfactory, warning, “coming week. we will use our enforcement team to ensure that people clean their drainages”.

In her assessment of the exercise, the Special Assistant to the governor on Environment, Prof. Ijeoma Iheukwumere warned that traders must do the right thing as “Abia must be clean”

A total of 30 offenders were convicted, while 4 were discharged on the grounds of health.
