A non-governmental organization, Charity Okonkwo Development Centre, CODC Wednesday came to the aid of the School of the Blind, Afara Umuahia financially.
Making the donation at the school, the Founder/Chairman of CODC, Uche Okonkwo said the centre is interested in the activities of People Living With Disability, PLWD considering what the country is going through now, hence his visits to such institutions “to see how to come in and support”.
“Your institution deserves attention by all at this critical period. We focus on charity, development, event and training, and we have special interest in orphans and vulnerable children (OVC) and persons with disabilities (PWD). “We render assistance in our little way and don’t want to wait.
He said the visit was also to make case for the institution, disclosing that apart from the cash support, the CODC will also come up with material donations in future.
Receiving the cash donation, the Principal of the school, Mrs. Selin Olugu appreciated CODC, stating “We appreciate people who come to help us.
“Currently, it is not easy for government to continue care for us, hence the need for organisation like this who came to our assistance”, she further stated.
The Principal said the school need cash, materials, food items, Braille materials, medicals and test kits.
In his speech, a former Senior Special Adviser to Gov. Okezie Ikpeazu on Disability Matters, Sam Ekeoma thanked CODC for remembering the school and advised other good spirited individuals and organizations to come to the aid of the visually impaired in the school.
According to a blind retiree, Godwin Ananaba, “Nigeria today is nothing to write home about, as such, there is the need to help those with disabilities.
Also speaking, the Director, Handicap Services, State Library Board, Friday Onugha appreciated the NGO, and called for more assistance to the PLWD in the state.
