The President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Tuesday signed the South East Development Commission Bill into law.
Expressing his excitement, the initiator of the bill and Deputy Speaker, House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu expressed his profound gratitude to the President for signing the South East Development Commission, SEDC bill into law, thereby approving the creation of the commission.
It will be recalled that the bill was sponsored by Kalu and all the lawmakers from the south east region from the House of Representatives.
In a late night state issued by Levinus Nwabughiogu, Chief Press Secretary to the Deputy Speaker, the Kalu said. “The bill sought to establish a commission that will be charged with the responsibility to receive and manage fund from allocation of the federation account for the reconstruction and rehabilitation of roads, houses and other infrastructural damage suffered by the region as a result of the effect of the civil war after 54 years.
“The commission will as well tackle the ecological problems and any other related environmental or developmental challenges in the Southeast States which include Abia, Imo, Enugu, Anambra and Ebonyi”.
Reacting to the cheery news, the statement said, the eleated Kalu profusely thanked President Tinubu, his colleagues in the national assembly and indeed, all Nigerians for supporting the bill”.
He also conveyed the appreciation of all Ndi Igbo from the South East region, assuring them of more positive attention from the President.
Meanwhile, a former Minority Leader in Abia State House of Assembly, and now a Special Aassistant to the Deputy Speaker, House of Representatives, Hon. Chijioke Chukwu says, “The war is over, Nigeria is fair to us”.
Hon. Chukwu who is also the Convener, Concerned Abia APC stakeholders said that the law will curb agitations in the south east, stating, “It will not only help in dousing tensions in the south east, but will also stop the agitations in the zone”.
As the President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu Tuesday signed into law the South East Development Commission Bill, the Special Adviser on Inter-Governmental Affairs, to the Deputy Speaker, House of Representatives, Hon. Chijioke Chukwu said, with this, agitations will be curbed I. the south east.
According to him, “It will not only help in dousing tensions in the south east, but will also stop the agitations in the zone.
“I am call on Ndigbo to see it as a welcome development and I am calling on all those agitating for one thing or the other to sheath their swords. I am also calling on unknown gunmen to see this as an opportunity to embrace moral solutions, not just for Ndigbo, but Nigeria in general. The passage of this bill is a beginning of good things to come to Ndigbo.
“I am also congratulating the indefatigable Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, who not only sponsored the bill, but remained vigilant against all oppositions and challenges along the line in getting this bill passed into law”.
The President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu had about 9 pm signed the South East Development Commission (SEDC) Bill into law, shortly after that of North West Development Commission Bill.
