A female political group, Queens International has regretted the gender imbalance in politics in Abia state, and vowed to sensitize women to take part in active politics.
Speaking on the occasion of their 10th year anniversary, the President, Fidelia Ukejianya Eze regretted that women have been relegated to the background in politics in Abia in particular and Nigeria in general, citing Abia State House of Assembly as an example of male dominated Assembly without a single female member.
The organization which is political and pro-Peoples Democratic Party, PDP Eze said “embark also on skills acquisition programmes, seminars and empowerment of indigent women and widows, including identifying with Motherless Babies Homes in the state, particularly in Umuahia South LGA of the state.
“We also encourage women to participate in politics and to support the government in power to achieve all round victory for its candidates and effectively mobilize women to participate enmass in the forthcoming elections”.
“In the next political dispensation, women will win. We have reviewed the position of women and have vowed that in the next dispensation, women will not lag behind.
“We are using 2023 elections to observe how women will perform and will stamp their feet in 2027”, she further stated.
The women used the opportunity to appreciate widows and awards to Abians, including a former first lady of the state, Mrs. Mercy Odochi Orji, Mrs. Ijeoma Farida Wada, the former first lady of Kogi State and Rt. Hon. Chinedum Enyinnaya Orji, the Speaker, Abia State House of Assembly among others.
In his speech after the award, the Speaker Rt. Hon. Chinedum Enyinnaya Orji assured that the matter concerning Ikwuano/Umuahia Federal Constituency will be his priority if he wins, come 2023 election.
According to an awardee, Sir Tony Ezebuiro, the plan by the women to expand women participation in politics is commendable, assuring them of his support in their sensitization agenda.
